Coming Back Together During the Pandemic

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace, Mercy, and Peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, who will be with us in truth and love. (2 John 1:3) All the letters to the believers from the apostle’s start with a similar greeting, but this is my favorite as it includes the promise that God is and will be with us.  Church council met on Monday 11 May  (via online Zoom video conference), to re-assess what we are doing and to plan what we are capable of doing for worship and ministry after Governor Northam‘s announcement to begin (effective May 15) Phase 1 easing of public health restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was made to return to holding worship at the church building on Sunday 24 May. This was based on discussions during this meeting and concerns for the continued safety of everyone as they decide whether to return to the church building for worship and Christian fellowship. There will be some modifications to how and what we typically did prior to the pandemic. Those changes are summarized below. Please accept these restrictions with the grace and love they provide to help ensure the safety of all concerned.

Special Conditions:

Item one:

A restricted seating arrangement will be in place to maintain a 6 ft social distance. The ushers will control the seating of attendees. The doors to the church will be opened for seating at 9:45 am. There may be a need to wait in line outside (6 ft apart) for a moment until ushered in. Please understand that your “normal spot” may not be available when you are ushered in. Once you enter the sanctuary you are expected to remain in your assigned seat except for bathroom emergencies. After the service, the ushers will dismiss the congregation in an orderly manner.  Please exit the building directly.  The Vicar and Deacon will NOT be available to greet worshipers following the service. PLEASE REFRAIN from shaking hands, hugging, or gathering in the narthex as you enter or leave.  You may certainly greet one another inside and outside before and after the service while maintaining social distancing.

Item two:

Masks shall be worn while inside the church. Please bring a mask to wear if you have one. If you do not bring one you will be given a mask to wear and required to wear it. No one will be allowed to enter without a mask (unless health conditions restrict wearing one).

Item three:

Bathroom access will be open from outside doors in the hallway in addition to inside. Due to the close proximity in the bathrooms, only one person will be allowed in each bathroom at any time.

Item four:

We will continue to record our worship services and provide them for viewing on-line from our Facebook and YouTube channels after the service (no live streaming). Those unable to access will be mailed hard copies of our worship bulletins and sermons.

Item five:

Our deacons will be contacting the people in their zones to keep in touch as well as to survey you on some ideas that were discussed at the meeting.

Discussion of other topics:

  • We urge you to continue your offerings as you are able. When you return to church, we will continue to not pass offering plates and have one available in the narthex.  If you decide not to be in church for a while, you may mail your checks to the attention of our Financial Secretary, Ann Lange, either to her home (address in the directory) or the church office. Alternatively, we have launched an automated giving program called “Joyful Response” in partnership with the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. The program allows you to automatically make contributions weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, or whenever you would like, at no cost to you or the congregation.  If interested, please obtain, complete, and mail the form to the church office.

I continue to give thanks and praise to those who are serving God and us by providing worship and ministry in new ways. Vicar Sean, Browyn, Organist John, music and trumpet player Micah, deacons Dave, Kelly, and Gail, Vaeh (vocalist), council members, members reaching out to other members, each of you as you pray, and those cleaning and maintaining the church buildings, flower beds, and lawns. We all need to keep many in our prayers, but especially all those caring for our health and safety and our government as it continues to deal with this crisis.

“The Lord is With US”, and God certainly is still with us as promised. The encouragement we hear in the media now is “We are in this Together”.  As we begin to come back together in person, we will need to reflect God’s Love for us.

If you have any questions or need help contact your Deacon or me.

In His Name,
John Lange, President
